Important Update: New 0.20.7 version ->
Dear Community,
We are writing to inform you of an important update regarding a recent deviation in the Hydra network weight. Our team has been closely monitoring the situation and has identified the cause of the issue.
The investigation has revealed the following:
- A specific corner case scenario was identified where a manually constructed transaction, with corrupt input parameters, was able to enter the mempool but was not processed into a block. The issue was likely inherited.
- When such a transaction gets stuck in the mempool, the affected node is unable to produce blocks to its full potential. This resulted in some nodes experiencing a reduction in staking weight of up to 95%.
- This deviation in network weight was observed and is the result of the affected nodes being unable to produce blocks to their full potential.
- It is important to note that there was no discrepancy of data or risk to user funds, as the affected nodes remained on the same chain and no fork took place. The impact was focused on staking weight and block production eligibility.
- The issue has occurred 4-5 times in the past, with the first incident taking place a few weeks ago, and did not affect historical performance prior to that.
- Statistically speaking the issue took place 4-5 times out of 771,497 blocks, but when it happened, it would affect the node's APR in a persistent manner until the transaction was abandoned.
- Core nodes have been patched already and network is already immune to the problem on systemic level.
- It is important to note that this issue only affects staking capability and poses no risk to user funds or the integrity of the Hydra chain data. The network has demonstrated strong recovery and connectivity during this stress test.
- The fix works on local mempool level, and gets activated immediately, however additional protocol level validation has been added as extra safety measures, which will be activated as a hard fork on block 852800 (~15th March 2023)
To ensure that your node is not affected by this issue now or in the future, we highly recommend that you update to the latest version, which can be found here:
At this time, only the Ubuntu 20.04x and Windows64bit versions have been released, with builds for other operating systems to be released by the end of the day.
We also recommend that when you update your node and delete the local mempool.dat file before restarting, as this will remove the potential bad transaction that is currently circulating among peers.
In conclusion, we consider this update to be critical due to the impact it has on individual staking APR and strongly advise all users who actively stake to take immediate action to update their nodes.
Thank you for your continuous support!
